Start here: what keyless actually buys you
It is worth being precise about this, because the marketing is not. Going keyless does not make your door harder to break. The bolt is the same bolt, the strike is the same strike, and the frame is the same frame. What changes is who can get in and how easily you can change that answer.
That turns out to be a lot. There is no key to lose, no key to hide under something outside, and no key that a former houseguest might have quietly copied at a hardware counter. Everyone who needs access gets their own code, so access can be granted and removed one person at a time without a locksmith visit and without new keys for the whole household. A door with an auto-lock setting stops depending on whether anybody remembered. And with a connected lock, you can confirm from somewhere else that the house is actually locked, which is a small thing that ends a specific kind of nagging.
What it does not buy is a stronger door. If that is the goal, the money belongs in the strike plate and the frame, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong upgrade.
Keypad deadbolt or connected lock? A short way to decide
These are two different products that get sold under one label, and picking wrong is the most common regret in this category.
A keypad deadbolt with no radio
Codes at the door, and nothing else. No app, no account, no network, no pairing to lose. Battery life is dramatically better because nothing is transmitting. Setup happens entirely at the lock in a few minutes. If your actual complaint is "I am tired of hiding a key outside" or "I want the cleaner to have her own code", this is the whole answer and the extra hardware would be dead weight.
A connected smart lock
Everything above, plus the ability to lock, unlock, check status and manage codes from away, and to get a notification when the door opens. Codes can often be scheduled or set to expire on a date. Some will unlock as you walk up. The cost is real: batteries work harder, there is an account and a phone app in the chain, and anything that depends on a network eventually has a day where the network is the problem.
Three questions usually settle it. Do you need to let someone in while you are not there? Do you want to know the door is locked without driving back? Are you willing to maintain an app and an account for the next several years? Two yeses point at connected. Three noes point firmly at a keypad deadbolt, and the money saved is better spent on the door itself.
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and hub radios, in plain English
Three ways a lock can talk, with genuinely different consequences and no brand names required.
Bluetooth only
The lock talks to a phone that is physically nearby. Very low power draw, so the batteries last. But nearby is the whole story — there is no remote control unless you add a separate plug-in bridge that sits within range of the lock and connects it onward. If you buy a Bluetooth lock expecting to unlock the door from work, that bridge is not optional and it is easy to miss on the box.
Wi-Fi built into the lock
The lock joins your home network directly. Nothing extra to buy, and full remote control. It is also the hungriest option by a wide margin, because a radio strong enough to reach the router is running on the same small cells that drive the motor. And it depends on signal quality at that exact door — which, in most houses, is the far corner from where the router lives. A lock that works perfectly during setup in the kitchen and drops offline weekly on the front door is almost always a coverage problem, not a defective lock. Details on our Wi-Fi deadbolt page.
Low-power mesh through a hub
The lock speaks a low-power protocol to a hub, and the hub handles the internet. Battery life is excellent, range is good because other mains-powered devices relay the signal, and it is generally the most stable of the three. The trade is that you now own and maintain a hub, and if you do not already have one it is another box, another power outlet and another thing to set up.
Retrofit or replace: what is already in your door
Two routes onto an existing door, and they suit different situations.
A retrofit unit replaces only the interior half of the deadbolt. Your existing exterior cylinder stays, your existing key still works, and if your locks are already keyed alike that arrangement survives untouched. It is the least invasive option and it preserves whatever mechanical setup you already like. The catch is that it has to be compatible with the deadbolt you have, and the exterior side stays exactly as good — or as tired — as it was.
A full replacement swaps the entire deadbolt. New cylinder, new bolt, new key, and a natural opportunity to correct a strike that was never right. It is the better choice when the existing hardware is worn, when the door has an alignment problem worth fixing properly, or when nobody knows how many copies of the current key exist.
What we measure either way: the bore diameter through the door face, the backset from the edge to the centre of that bore, the door thickness, and the existing latch or bolt depth. This is the section that saves people the most money, so it gets the most space.
A manual deadbolt has a human on the end of it. If the bolt catches slightly on the strike, you lean on the key or the thumbturn a little harder without consciously registering that you did it, and the door locks. You may have been doing that for years. A motorised lock cannot lean. It has a small motor and a fixed amount of torque, and if the bolt meets resistance the motor stalls, backs off, and reports a jam — or worse, leaves the bolt half-thrown so the door looks locked and is not.
So a door that was merely annoying becomes a door that fails, and the lock takes the blame. Causes, in rough order of how often they turn up: the strike hole is shallower or narrower than the bolt needs and always was; hinge screws have backed out or pulled, letting the door sag so the bolt no longer lines up; the door has swollen in humidity and sits tighter in the frame than it did in the dry months; weatherstripping is compressed enough to push the door out of position; or a storm door is holding pressure against it.
The test takes ten seconds and anyone can do it. Open the door wide and throw the bolt by hand — it should move freely with almost no effort. Now close the door and throw it again. If it suddenly needs pressure, the lock is fine and the door is the problem, and no amount of resetting or re-pairing will fix it. That single comparison correctly explains a large share of the calls that come in as "the smart lock broke".
The fix is usually humble: enlarge or reposition the strike so the bolt drops in cleanly, put long screws through the strike into the framing behind the jamb, drive the hinge screws back into fresh material, adjust the weatherstripping. Done properly, batteries stop dying prematurely, because the motor stops fighting the door on every cycle. That is covered under smart lock repair.
Batteries: "full" and "fine" are not the same word
A lock's battery indicator reads voltage while nothing much is happening. The motor cares about voltage while it is pulling current to drive a metal bolt. Those two numbers can differ enormously, and alkaline cells in particular hold a respectable resting reading long after they have lost the ability to deliver a strong burst. That is the whole explanation for the most confusing symptom in this category: the app says the batteries are full, and the lock stalls anyway.
Symptoms that all point at the same thing:
- Works reliably in the afternoon, struggles first thing on a cold morning. Cells deliver less current when they are cold.
- Works with the door open, fails with it closed. That is load, and it means the door needs attention as much as the batteries do.
- Retries two or three times and then succeeds. The motor is right at the edge of what the cells can supply.
- The keypad lights up normally but the bolt does not move. Lighting a display takes almost nothing; turning a bolt does not.
Practical habits that prevent most of it. Replace the whole set at once, never one or two cells — a fresh cell paired with tired ones gets dragged down to the weakest member. Do not mix brands or chemistries in one set. Understand that rechargeable cells rest at a lower nominal voltage than alkalines, so some locks read a freshly charged set as low from day one and will keep nagging. Write the date on the battery compartment or on the cells themselves so you are working from a fact instead of a feeling. "My smart lock stopped working" — the order to check things
Work through this sequence rather than jumping to a factory reset, which is where most people start and which almost never helps.
- Put in a complete fresh set of batteries. Not one, not two. All of them, same brand, same type. This resolves more calls than everything below combined.
- Throw the bolt by hand with the door open. Free and smooth, or stiff? Stiff here means the lock body or its mounting, not the door.
- Throw it by hand with the door closed. Any change from step two means the strike and the alignment are your problem, and no software step will touch it.
- Check the hinge and strike screws. Loose or spinning screws let the door move a few millimetres, which is enough.
- Check the interior assembly is not pinching. Overtightened mounting screws or a tailpiece or adapter seated in the wrong slot will bind the mechanism in a way that reads exactly like a motor fault.
- Only now look at the network. An app that will not connect while the bolt throws perfectly by hand is a connectivity issue, and it is a completely separate investigation from a lock that will not move.
- Reset and re-pair last. It is the step people try first and it is the step that fixes the fewest problems. If the mechanics are wrong, a fresh pairing gives you a beautifully configured lock that still jams.
The rule underneath all of that: a lock that fails only when the door is closed is never a firmware problem.
Running codes properly
Keyless entry is worth having only if the codes are managed like access rather than like a shared password. The whole advantage collapses if the entire household plus the dog walker plus a contractor from two summers ago all use the same four digits.
What actually works. Give one code per person, and a separate code to anyone who comes occasionally rather than lending them somebody else's. Use scheduled or expiring codes where the lock supports them, so temporary access ends on its own instead of relying on you to remember. Rotate deliberately after the events that change who should have access: moving in, a relationship ending, a phone going missing, a job finishing. Keep a written record of which code belongs to whom, somewhere private — a code that nobody can account for is a code nobody can safely delete, and unaccounted codes accumulate quietly for years. Keep the master or programming code out of that list and off the front of the refrigerator.
One physical detail that people underestimate: keypads wear. After a year of the same code, four buttons look visibly different from the rest — polished, or grimy in a different pattern. Someone who can see which four digits are in play has reduced the guessing problem enormously. Wipe the keypad down occasionally, prefer longer codes, and if the lock allows entering padding digits before or after the real code, use that feature.
Mechanical override, and where to keep the key
Every keyless door needs an answer to "what if it will not open", decided at install time rather than in the dark.
If the lock has a keyed cylinder, keep that key and put it somewhere reachable without already being inside — with a neighbour or family member, in a bag you carry, or in a lockbox you control. A backup key on the kitchen counter is not a backup. Not under a mat, not under a planter, and not in the magnetic box under the car, because those are the first three places anyone checks.
Many keypads without a cylinder provide external contacts on the underside where a nine-volt battery pressed against them supplies enough power to wake the keypad and accept a code. Find that contact once, in daylight, and keep a nine-volt somewhere sensible. If the lock has neither a cylinder nor external terminals, then the backup is a different door, and that is a decision to make consciously before you commit the front door to keyless.
The honest limit
None of the electronics resist force. A door comes in at the frame, and what stands between a shoulder and your hallway is the length of the bolt, the strike plate, and whether the screws holding that strike reach past the thin jamb trim into the structural framing behind it. Short screws into soft trim are the single most common weakness on residential doors, and they are cheap to fix.
Which is why we would rather correct a strike and put proper screws into the framing than upsell a lock. A high-end smart lock mounted on a door with a flimsy strike is a convenience upgrade sitting on top of an unsolved security problem, and it is worth knowing which of the two you are actually buying.
Keypads on the Gulf Coast
Electronics on the outside of a house here face conditions that inland installations do not, and it shapes what we recommend.
Humidity is constant, and the practical consequence is condensation forming on and inside a cool keypad when warm damp air hits it in the morning. Salt in the air works on exposed metal trim and on contacts behind an imperfect gasket. Direct afternoon sun on a west-facing door heats both the electronics and the batteries, and heat shortens cell life measurably. Wind-driven rain on a door with no overhang finds any gap the design left.
What that means in practice: seat the gaskets properly and seal the cable pass-through rather than assuming the factory did it; favour hardware whose finish is rated for coastal exposure on doors that get weather directly; understand that touchscreens can misread wet fingers where physical buttons generally do not; and on a door with no protection above it at all, expect a shorter service life and plan for it rather than being surprised. A small drip cap or overhang above an exposed keypad door does more for reliability than any setting in an app.
When you take over a house
Moving in is the moment where access is most likely to be wrong and least likely to be checked. Whoever lived there before had keys, and so, quite possibly, did people they gave keys to. Four separate steps, and skipping any one leaves a hole:
- Rekey or replace the mechanical cylinder. Electronic codes do nothing about a physical key that still turns.
- Delete every existing user code and set new ones. Do not assume the list was cleared, and do not assume it was empty.
- Change the master or programming code. A default or inherited programming code lets someone add themselves back without your knowledge.
- Check the app account, not just the lock. This is the one people miss. A previous owner or an installer can remain an authorised user or even the account owner in the app, and no amount of resetting codes at the keypad removes them. Confirm the account is yours and that the user list contains only names you recognise.
What we ask before coming out
- What is on the door now — a separate deadbolt, a handle set with a lock in the knob, or both?
- Is the door wood, fibreglass or metal, and does it currently close and latch without being pushed?
- Do you want app control and remote access, or only codes at the door?
- How is the wireless signal in that part of the house — strong, patchy, or effectively absent?
- How many people need their own code, and does anyone need temporary access?
- Have you already bought hardware, and is the box still available for the specifications?
- Is this an upgrade, or is something failing right now?
The kinds of calls that come in — described generally
No invented job stories here. What is useful is the pattern, because keyless-entry work sorts cleanly into four groups:
- The lock is correct and the door is not. Jam errors, bolts that half-throw, batteries that vanish in weeks. Fixed at the strike and the hinges, not in the app.
- Power. Exhausted cells, a mismatched set, a chemistry the lock reads as low from new, or a keypad that will not wake at all.
- Connectivity, with the mechanics fine. The bolt moves perfectly and the app cannot see it. Signal at the door, a bridge or hub out of position, an account or firmware issue.
- Access changes. Nothing is broken. Someone needs to stop being able to get in, or several people need their own way in, and it needs doing properly rather than by sharing one code again.
The first two groups account for most of what actually gets called a broken smart lock, which is why the phone conversation starts with the door and the batteries rather than with the brand.

Can a smart lock go on my existing door?
Usually yes. Most residential smart deadbolts retrofit into the standard bore that is already cut for your current deadbolt, and some designs replace only the interior half and leave your existing exterior cylinder and key alone. The things that decide it are the bore diameter, the backset, the door thickness, and whether the door is currently closing squarely. We check all four before anything is unboxed.
What happens when the batteries die?
It depends entirely on how the lock was set up, which is why the fallback is an install decision rather than an afterthought. Locks with a keyed override open with a physical key. Many keypads have external contacts that let a nine-volt battery held against them power the lock long enough to enter a code. Some designs have neither, and for those the plan has to be a second entry door or a spare set of cells stored where you can reach them without getting inside first.
My lock says the batteries are full but it keeps jamming. Why?
Because a battery gauge reads resting voltage and the motor cares about voltage under load. A set of cells can sit near their nominal reading with no current flowing, then sag hard the moment the motor pulls to drive the bolt. The lock reports full and stalls anyway. The other half of that symptom is mechanical: if the bolt is dragging on the strike, the motor draws far more current than it should and even good batteries look weak.
Do I need Wi-Fi at the door for a smart lock?
Only if you want the lock to be reachable when you are not home. A keypad deadbolt with no radio at all still gives you codes instead of keys, and it will outlast a connected lock on the same batteries. If you do want remote access, the signal strength at that specific door matters more than the plan you pay for, and exterior doors are often the weakest corner of the house for coverage.
Can you fix a smart lock someone else installed?
Yes, and that is a large part of this work. Most locks described as broken are not electrically faulty at all. They are misaligned doors, an interior mount that is pinching the mechanism, a tailpiece or adapter seated wrong, exhausted batteries, or a pairing that dropped. We diagnose in that order and only talk about replacement once the mechanical side has been ruled out.
Should I still keep a physical key?
Yes, if the lock has a cylinder for one, and it should live somewhere you can actually reach without already being inside. A key sitting on the kitchen counter is not a backup. If the lock is keyless with no cylinder, the equivalent is planning a second way in before you need it rather than at eleven at night.
Is a smart lock more secure than an ordinary deadbolt?
Physically, no, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling. The same bolt goes into the same strike plate in the same frame. What a smart lock changes is access control: no key to copy or lose, a separate code per person, the ability to revoke someone without a locksmith, and a door that locks itself when you forget. Those are real benefits and they are not the same thing as resistance to force.
Can each person in the house have their own code?

The keypad stopped responding after heavy rain. Is it ruined?
Often not. Moisture behind the faceplate or in the battery compartment can make a keypad ignore presses or read them erratically, and it frequently recovers once it dries and the contacts are cleaned. What prevents a repeat is the boring part: a properly seated gasket, sealed cable pass-through, and where a door has no overhang at all, accepting that an exposed keypad on that door lives a hard life.
